Favorite Toy

“Hey, where’s my favorite toy?” Bones asked me, walking into the living room from the kitchen doorway. His ears were up, and his eyes wide.

“Which one?” I asked, “The red bulbous one, or the green rubber Z?”

“No, no,” he trotted to the couch, and walked across, jumping to the second couch. “The big one. It makes me feel jumpy and like I want to tear something apart – I want that one.”

“Ach – it sounds like a drug, not a toy.”

“A what?”

“A drug is a… food, or drink, I guess, putting it simply. When humans eat it they can get jittery, talk fast, not stand still, or the room they’re in looks like its twisting around them, and some humans have even believed they turned into a glass of orange juice, or they chew another person’s face off because of drugs. Drugs are horrible. Why would you want something like that?” Then it occurred to me, “How do we have something like that in the house?!”

“You seem to like this toy around,” Stated Bones, walking the length of the couch to me. “I try to bite it and it moves, I growl at it and it growls back, it’s great! When I play with it, I want to chew on everything and twist my body around. It also knows how to make my bouncing toy fly so I can chase it…”

“Wait – This toy – does it walk around like me?”

“Yeah, it moves around.”

“And has hands and says words?”

“Right. It says ‘go’, and ‘move,’ and ‘get it!’ … and ‘cutie’ like you do, but without saying ‘patootie’ after. It’s my favorite toy.”

“You’re talking about Jacob.”

“That’s what you call it, yeah! I want the Jacob toy.” He jumped down to the floor, excited now that he remembered.

I rolled my eyes and sighed, shaking my head. “He’s at a friend’s house skateboarding.”

“Man…” Bones settled down in the middle of the floor and sighed. “I hope it comes back soon. I can hardly wait to see what it’ll do next.”
